From Local Roots to European Tapestry: My Transformative Journey

When borders blur and languages intertwine, personal stories become powerful narratives of European integration.

My journey began in a small Norwegian village with a grandmother who spoke a dialect I barely understood. Little did I know this would be my first lesson in communication and connection.

At seven, I memorized a German peace song without comprehending its meaning. By thirteen, Derrick in the German crime show became my language teacher. In 1992, just after the Berlin Wall fell, a class trip to Berlin transformed abstract history into living experience.

Fourteen years in Germany taught me that European integration isn’t just political – it’s deeply personal. My Bulgarian husband, multilingual children, and political science background revealed integration’s most profound truth: connection transcends borders.

Today, as a local politician, I’ve learned that democracy isn’t inherited – it’s cultivated, municipality by municipality, conversation by conversation.

In a world of conflicts, our shared European story is our greatest strength.
